CHAPTER 4

Living with Gifts

All people with intuitive gifts must learn how to comprehend signs. The best way for me to illustrate how a medium/predictor learns is by using myself as an example. For all of you with your own stories of predicting people’s death, picking up on vibes that others put out, and other intuitive gifts, this chapter will reassure you that you’re not alone. I get many letters from people who find solace in knowing that, although they thought they were isolated in their gift, they are in truth a part of a far bigger family. My dad always said, “Make no apologies for who you are.” For those of you who feel overly responsible for everything around you and even burdened by your awareness and your abilities, I have a suggestion. Try writing “Make no apologies for who you are!” on your mirror or somewhere that you will see it when you wake up in the morning. This will serve as a reminder to deflect any shame that you have owing to others’ closed minds.

Any saying/mantra that inspires you is worth recognizing regularly and taking in so frequently that it becomes a part of who you are. For the longest time I had “Go to your destiny!” written in lipstick on my bedroom mirror. I heard it for the first time on Oprah when two Olympic runners who came from a troubled neighborhood explained how they beat the odds and emerged as successful people from a place where most people didn’t emerge at all. They inspired me to live by those words. Instead of hesitantly climbing out of bed, wondering what obstacles I would face, I sprang out of bed ready to “Go to my destiny,” whatever that might be.

There is nothing to be ashamed of in just being who you are. As a matter of fact, you should feel blessed to be given the ability to connect with others in such a profound way. Instead of saying, “It’s a curse to know when someone is going to pass ahead of time,” try, “How fortunate am I to be given the opportunity to say good-bye to someone I love and sometimes even to allow myself to be used as an instrument to help save someone’s life.”

For those people who share your gifts in other ways, like being the nurse with unbeatable bedside manner most of us pray for when our loved ones are in need, know that your gifts are just as great. You might be the grocer the elderly look forward to seeing every week because you brighten their day. There are so many gifts that a person can have. What they all have in common is that only sharing your gift with others makes it meaningful. Mediums/predictors can share our gifts in ways that aren’t overstepping our bounds. We can listen to those who need to talk and mix in a little of our intuition with good advice for a person who needs a friend. There’s
